The newly elected Member of County Assembly for Muguga Ward Hon. Joseph Githinji Mung'ara was this afternoon sworn in at the Assembly. The Hon. Mung'ara clinched the Muguga by election on 15th July 2021.

Assembly Speaker Hon. Stephen Ndicho congratulated the MCA and assured him of support for the remaining time of the term.

I wish to take this opportunity to welcome you and congratulate you for winning that hotly contested seat and we look forward to working with you in the remaining period of this Assembly. The members who are here physically and those attending virtually will be able to give you guidance on how to conduct legislative business. We are a house of 93 members but because of COVID-19 we are unable to meet here physically therefore we do it online or virtually. I thereby ask the ICT department to set you up on the virtual system.” Said Hon Stephen Ndicho.

In his maiden speech in the chambers, Hon. Mung’ara thanked the members for ushering him into the Assembly and the people of Muguga for having elected him.

“It has taken the hand of God to come this far, I would like to thank Muguga voters they came out in large numbers to vote for me. To my family and neighbors, I also thank you for the prayers and support. I cannot forget to thank the Governor Dr. James Nyoro who spent a lot of time with me in the field to gather votes. With the support of the Members of this County Assembly I know I will get the right support as a first timer and you will guide me.” He said.

Hon. Githinji contested the Muguga by election on a Jubilee Party ticket and garnered 4,089 votes, 27 votes ahead of his closest opponent Peter Thumbi who garnered 4,062.

Fellow Members of County Assembly also welcomed Hon Githinji for his election victory and assured him of support an guidance as he settles into the Assembly.

Hon Kimani Wanjiku, the MCA for Kinoo Ward was particularly elated and welcomed Hon Githinji. Hon. Kimani narrated how he and the newly elected member kept vigil at the tallying center in Muguga until the election was announced.

“It was a tough journey but like Hon Githinji has said, it was by God’s grace that we clinched this seat. I remember at the tallying center when the process was delayed for more than three hours but we were patient and Hon. Githinji emerged the winner.” Said Hon Kimani.

Other members who spoke during the plenary session were Hon. Virginia Njuguna, who also welcomed Hon. Githinji and asked him to serve the people of Muguga without bias but instead focus on responding to their pleas.

The leader of Majority this afternoon also moved a motion of adjournment of the House for a period of one month until 6th September 2021. He also congratulated the newly sworn in Member and assured him that his office would use this time of recess to properly induct him on processes of the house. Hon. Gachara also asked the members to use the recess period to fully focus on serving the people in their respective wards.

I am pleased by the support and the dedication in which members have displayed while serving the people of Kiambu. We have been able to dispense 35 motions, 3 bills, 4 petitions and 34 statements all under very challenging conditions because the Pandemic is still with us.” Said Hon. Gachara.

While supporting the adjournment motion, Kinoo Ward MCA also remarked that today was a particularly special day for him as he got to witness the swearing in of his friend Hon. Githinji but that it was also the day in which the Shona Community were officially handed identification documents fully recognizing them as Kenyan Citizens.

“I am very happy that the Shona Community received full citizenship and received their ID cards. We began this journey here and it has come to fruition today. So, it is a double celebration as we swear in Hon Githinji for Muguga Ward, where some Shona people reside.” He said.
